I stayed up last night until 3:30 am in order to watch the lunar eclipse. I managed to grab a few pictures as well.
The early ones were taken with a Nikon D3000 with a 55-200 1:4.5 – 6G ED lens at Hi-1 (1600+) ISO setting, with a 1/4000 shutter speed with an aperture of f/5.6.
For the red-tinted ones I had to switch to a 1/3″ setting and compensated with about a +5.0 setting on the +/- setting. That helped me get the colour and the depth.
I ended up playing around with the settings a lot and caught a wide range of images. I have found, though, that my lens doesn’t focus properly on far-away things (the infinity setting is almost too far…), so many of the images still came out blurry despite me using a tripod and the timer setting.
Although I had to stop because my camera shut off (after 2.5 hours in freezing weather, who can blame it?), and my hands and arms were sort-of numb by the end, it was still a worthwhile activity. They say we won’t see this phenomenon again in our lifetimes. Lucky me the sky was so perfectly clear over Toronto.
