Four-Square Chess

My five year old came up with a new way to play chess; it’s an especially great way to play chess with someone who doesn’t know how to play chess properly.

The game starts with all the pieces arranged around the perimeter of the board, organized by pawns alternating on their native colour and then each if the back-row pieces. Four pawns are placed in the centre, each on it’s own colour.

The objective of the game is to get rid of your own pieces by making a square of four pieces together. The first player to get rid of all his or her pieces wins.

Strategy can be used to block a player’s construction of four squares of the same coloured pieces, thus gaining an advantage.

Each game goes pretty quickly, which works well when you’re playing with a small kid. It’s also easy for each player to succeed, which makes the game a bit easier to play.

All-in-all, a useful, quick modification of a popular game.
