Training Wheel Hack

I had to hack the training wheels I bought for the new two-wheeler. It’s really quite unbelievable that they didn’t come with instructions — their parts being so carefully constructed.

The problem was this: when I attached the wheels, one of the screws tightened as the wheel turned around. This meant that by the time we got to the end of the street on the first ride, the bleeping bike wouldn’t go any further forward.

Very frustrating. Also, a very good way to make a small child instantly irate, a condition easily noted by the shrill, “It won’t go any more!” exclamations issuing forth from the small child’s mouth like a burst blister.

I’m sure there was a better way to assemble the various pieces that came with the training wheel kit, but apparently Canadian Tire doesn’t think it necessary to fill the consumer in on that part. Otherwise I’m sure they would’ve included a picture. Or list. Or something.

So I bought a bolt with an expanding collar and used that instead. By adding some washers in just the right places, I was able to free the wheel and let it turn unobstructed.

We have yet to prove the modification, but my confidence is high.
